The common view of a library is someplace quiet. Lots of books and other forms of media to borrow for a set amount of time. These days, lots of computers, too. In the past, I've been in very quiet public libraries.
Yeahhhh...about that.
I, being a good little MedicBast, cheerfully pack up all of my textbooks to go and study at the local library. It's a branch of the Salt Lake City Public Library, not too far away from home. I find an empty table, pull out my biology book and math book, then sit down to do this math homework. Or try to. The librarian seemed to only talk in a voice that was on the borderline between "inside voice" and "outside voice," but she was able to project that voice. I bet that people could hear her upstairs. Then people can't seem to get the idea of turning off one's cellphone ringer, or if you are about to start a long conversation, maybe going outside.
I get through one set of math problems before feeling the urge to scream becoming more than I could handle, so I packed up and left. It was really the only thing to do. (And it was about time for the farmer's market to start and there is a vendor there who sells Coke in glass bottles that has the logo painted on...) So far the only really truly quiet place I've found with minimal distractions is the second floor of the library at school - it's a designated quiet zone, and there are study carrels. Why do I see myself spending most of my next four years up there? Ah well, le sigh. At least if I get to school early enough in the morning there is parking, focus on the positives.
Next time: Tuesday and WHY must we use a ridiculously expensive calculator?
